The calls you never see

How many calls does a small trades shop actually miss?

Every call that rings out leaves no trace. Here is how to see what your phone is not telling you.

Start with your call log

Open the phone app on the cell you use for work. Scroll back a full week, not just today. Count the calls you answered, the calls you declined, and the ones that show as missed.

That count is only the part the phone decides to show you. A missed call shows up only if the caller stayed on the line long enough for your carrier to register it.

Do this for a month, not a day. Patterns show up only when you look at a full cycle of jobs, weather, and weekends.

What to look for

  • Missed calls with no voicemail
  • Calls that rang once or twice
  • Same number calling back later
  • Blocked or unknown numbers
  • Declined calls you let ring out

Each of those is a lead that got away. The list gets longer when you are on a roof, under a sink, or driving to the next job.

What voicemail does and does not catch

Voicemail catches the caller who is patient and polite. It does not catch the caller who hangs up after three rings. That caller goes straight to the next shop in their Google search.

Your voicemail also gives the caller a job to do. They have to listen, wait for the beep, and talk to a recording. Many will not bother. The ones who do leave a message still might not call back when you return the call two hours later.

So the messages you get are the survivors. The callers who hung up are invisible. They never show up in your call log as anything but a missed call, and if the phone did not ring for a full ring, they might not show up at all.

This is why the missed call count in your phone is the floor, not the ceiling. The real number is always higher, and you cannot find it by staring at the log.

Why the number stays invisible

Three filters hide the real count from you

01

The ring that never registers

If you are in a basement or on a jobsite with bad signal, a call can land as a silent notification or vanish entirely. Your phone never shows it, so your call log lies.

02

The two second hang up

Callers do not wait for voicemail. A single unanswered ring can be enough for someone in a hurry to move on to the next name. That call leaves a missed call entry, but no message and no clue what they wanted.

03

The callback that goes nowhere

You call back, they do not pick up, and now the chase is on the other foot. If you leave a voicemail and they never call back, you have no way to know if they found someone else or just gave up.

So what is the real number?

How many calls am I missing?

Nobody can tell you from here. The number is different for every shop, every season, and every neighbourhood. The only way to know is to start tracking what your phone does not show.

Should I count voicemails as missed calls?

Count them, but only as the minimum. Messages are the calls you know about. The silent hang ups are the ones that hurt.

Would an answering service change this?

Yes. If a real person answers, every ring gets a response. The calls that once vanished become conversations, and you see the volume you were missing.
